POETRY OF PAINTING WITH CARL WHITE
May 3, 6-8pm
Join Carl White for a visual presentation and discussion of his creative process linking poetry and painting, as well as realism, and abstraction. White’s work includes imagery borrowed from mythology and history and resonates with a Renaissance sensibility.
MARY KAVANAGH: WENDOVER & THE CENTER FOR LAND USE INTERPRETATION (CLUI)

Mary Kavanagh will discuss the research site and experience behind her project including: residencies at the Center for Land Use Interpretation (CLUI) in Wendover, Utah in 2010 and 2011. CLUI is uniquely situated on the historic WWII Wendover Airfield, once a training site for over 20 bomber groups including the 509th Composite Group, the crew that dropped the atomic bombs on Japan in 1945. Today, Wendover Airfield is actively used by military training crews, private pilots, and commercial jetliners.

Mary Kavanagh will host a screening of her video installation, ‘Atomic Suite,’ a series of movements describing responses to the experience of war or its fall out: U.S. Marines in parachute training; post cold war ordinance disposal at the Utah Test and Training Range; dancing in the Enola Gay Hangar; and a series of other activities connected through a time continuum dating back to the building of the Atomic Bomb. Q & A with the artist to follow.

The AGC is proud to host the launch of David Campion and Sandra Shields’ book, ‘Cowboy Wild’ (Rocky Mountain Books, May 2012), a photographic exploration of the Calgary Stampede, the world’s biggest Wild West. The collection features images and an essay that speak to our cultural cowboy fascination with insight and wry humour. Presented in partnership with Wordfest. Visit: www.wordfest.com.
